いつもの江戸川橋のコーヒー豆屋さん「マメココロ」に、中国のコーヒーがあったので、早速購入しました。

焙煎はシティーローストでお願いしました。とってもきれいです。
ナッツ系の芳醇な香りでしょうか、思わず「えっ、これはすごいや！」って唸ってしまうほど印象的な香りと味わいです。バランスもよく取れています。
雲南って、プーアール茶で有名な地です。今では中国もコーヒーの産地として知名度も急上昇しているように思うのですが、２年前は少なくとも自分にはそうでもなかったです。そうだ、２０２３年１１月の旅行では、「コーヒー」も主要なテーマだったのです。深圳のGEE COFFEE というカフェとSpecialty Coffee に強いインパクトを受けたのですが、そこでいただいたコーヒーが雲南でした。メニューに「雲南普洱」って書いてあって、かすかに頭が混乱して「コーヒーですよね？」って間の抜けた質問をしてしまった記憶がどうも消せません・・
この深圳でのインパクトのもう一つは「コーヒー談義」に花が咲いたことです。カウンター席に隣り合わせたもちろん初対面のお客さんと、どちらが話しかけたのかよく覚えていないのですが、長々とおしゃべりをしてしまい、店も気を利かせてテイスティング的にそれぞれをシェアさせてくれましたし。
これ以降ですね。旅先でカフェに入るときは、必ず「コーヒー談義」を求めるようになったのは。できればお客さん同士で。
しかし、お客さんとで話が弾んだのは、深圳、ペナン、KL、ホーチミン、といったところで、香港、シンガポール、そして東京では、なかなか隣り合わせたお客さんに話かけるのが自然に出てこないのですよね。それはなぜなのかよくわからないのですが、やっぱり私が大都会には合わないのでしょうかね？？
ともあれ来年１月です。深圳では必ずGEE COFFEE にも行きます。何か豆を持って行って、淹れてもらいたいですね。やっぱりPHILOCOFFEAの「TOKYO BLEND」でしょうかね！

At my usual coffee bean shop “Mamekokoro” in Edogawabashi, I found some coffee from China, so I bought it right away — Yunnan Baoshan Satoen.
I asked for a city roast. It looks beautiful.
It has a rich, nutty aroma — so striking that I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Wow, this is amazing!” The fragrance and flavor are truly impressive, and the balance is excellent.
Yunnan, of course, is famous for Pu’er tea. These days, I feel that China’s recognition as a coffee-producing country has risen sharply, but at least two years ago, that wasn’t really the case for me. Oh, that’s right — during my trip in November 2023, “coffee” was actually one of the main themes. I was deeply impressed by a café in Shenzhen called GEE COFFEE and by their specialty coffee. The coffee I had there was also from Yunnan. I still can’t forget how the menu said “Yunnan Pu’er,” and I got momentarily confused and asked the silly question, “Wait, this is coffee, right?”
Another unforgettable thing about that experience in Shenzhen was the “coffee talk.” I don’t remember who started the conversation, but I ended up chatting for a long time with the person sitting next to me at the counter — a complete stranger, of course. The café staff were thoughtful enough to let us share our coffees tasting-style, too.
Since then, whenever I visit a café while traveling, I always find myself hoping for some “coffee talk.” Ideally with fellow customers. But honestly, the places where I’ve actually had great conversations with other customers were Shenzhen, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Ho Chi Minh City. In Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo, though, it somehow doesn’t feel natural to strike up a conversation with the person next to me. I’m not sure why that is — maybe I just don’t quite fit in with big cities?
Anyway, next January I’ll be back in Shenzhen, and I’ll definitely visit GEE COFFEE again. I’d love to bring some beans and have them brew it for me. Maybe PHILOCOFFEA’s “TOKYO BLEND” would be the right choice!
