日本のSPECIALITY COFFEE を東南アジアでバトン繋ぎしてみる！Hand Over the Baton of Speciality Coffee of Japan in South East Asia!

　香港マラソンで「かっこよくゴールする」を目標にでかけますが、どうも生まれついた貧乏性なのか動き回るのは変えられません💦。東南アジア歴訪にしてしまいます。
　ちょうど時期的に「タイプーサム（２月１日）」に近いこともあり、でひ現場で見てみたいです。ゆえにここまでの期間で、香港ー深圳ーシンガポールージョホールバルーマラッカーKLと回ります。これって２０２３年１１月に退職後に回ったルートとほぼ類似で、やっぱりこれらの国々が好きなのですね。いつまでも。

　そして、そこでの旅のテーマの一つに突如掲げることにしたのが「日本のSPECIALITY COFFEEを東南アジアでバトン繋ぎしてみる！」
　昨年、マラッカのカフェ「Calanthe Art Cafe」で、持ち込みのPHILOCOFFEA のTOKYO BLENDを、恐れ多くも私がハンドドリップさせていただき、皆さんと一緒に飲ませていただいた体験があまりにも楽しく、かつ、私にとっての好きなカフェの定義を「店でコーヒー談義ができる」というところに置いているため、今回の旅では、それを各訪問地でそれぞれ実践して、いっそのこと、「バトン繋ぎ」みたいな展開で遊んでみよう、という趣旨です。私が自分でハンドドリップするのはさすがにCalanthe は超懇意にさせてもらっていての我儘なのですが、普通の店ではそうはいきません。普通にオーダーした後、様子を見ておもむろに、持ち込んだ豆を「これ、淹れて飲んでいただけませんか？」って打診してみる展開です。受けていただき、楽しく会話できれば「バトン繋ぎ成功！」。候補と致しまして、下記７店舗を考えています。いや実はほとんど既に訪問済で、ここは大丈夫かな、という店です。全面成功できれば、私が日々思っている「Speciality Coffee の高度な汎用性が東南アジアでも共通」であることの立証になります。２０２３年の巡回では自分で納得できる纏めができなかったので、再チャレンジですね。

１．香港＝Barista Jam
　上環の名店です。久しぶりの友人との会談で舞い上がってしまい、普通に写真撮れていません💦　でも、正直、ここはちょっと不安💦💦頑張れ！

２．深圳＝GEE Coffee
　前稿で興奮をお伝えしました。こっちは安牌です。

３．シンガポール＝Apartment Coffee

　ここだけは初です。　何回か出したNylon Coffee は大好きな非常にいい店なのですが、カウンター席がない造りで、コーヒー談義はそもそも難しいのです。
 Apartment Coffee のネットの口コミではイイ感じです。

４．ジョホールバル＝My Liberica
　コーヒービジネスで最も尊敬するお一人、Jason Liew氏経営のカフェ。ここも複数回紹介させていただいています。とにかく気持ちがいい店。

５．マラッカ＝WA Coffee
　店のInstagram に「行きまーす」と事前に言っておいたら、覚えていて（待っていて？）くれたほんわかする店です。

６．KL=Ghostbird Coffee
 KLにはSpeciality Coffee の店はたくさんあるのでしょうが、行けば必ず寄ってしまう店です。SNSでは様々な挑戦をしているのが紹介されていて、奥の深さは一級品であるのは間違いありません。

７．ホーチミン＝96B Cafe & Roastery
　２０２４年の旅で焙煎のワークショップに参加させてもらった店で、個人的な印象度でもトップクラスに入ります。正直な話、あのベトナムで！（ベトナム式コーヒーはそれはそれで好きなのですが）、対照的と言える程とんがってかつ寛げる名店が存在することに衝撃を受けた店です。

　これらの地は香港とシンガポール以外は「コーヒー豆の産地」です。そこで同じ土俵に立つためには、焙煎において「日本」ないしは「東京」をアピールする必要があります。その意味でもPhilocoffea のTokyo Blend の持ち込みが最適だと思うのですよね。「粕谷さん？知らない」って言われたら困ってしまうのですが、そんなことはないでしょう。

I’m heading out to the Hong Kong Marathon with the goal of finishing in style—but maybe it’s just in my nature that I can’t stay still 💦. So instead of just a quick trip, it’s turning into a whole tour of Southeast Asia.

Since the timing is close to Thaipusam (February 1), I’d really love to see the festival in person. So, my route this time will be: Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Singapore → Johor Bahru → Melaka → Kuala Lumpur. It’s actually almost the same route I took after retiring in November 2023—guess that just shows how much I love these countries. Always have, always will.

And this time, I’ve suddenly decided to add a new theme to my travels:
“Passing the baton of Japanese specialty coffee throughout Southeast Asia!”

Last year, at Calanthe Art Café in Melaka, I had the amazing opportunity to brew a hand-drip coffee myself using Philocoffea’s TOKYO BLEND, which I’d brought with me. Sharing that coffee with everyone there was such a joyful experience. For me, the definition of a “great café” is one where you can have real conversations about coffee.

So on this trip, I’m going to try doing that at each place I visit — like a kind of “coffee baton relay.” Of course, me doing a hand-drip myself like I did at Calanthe was a bit of a special privilege; that’s not something you can easily do in a regular café. So this time, after ordering normally, I’ll casually ask, “Would you mind brewing these beans I brought with me?”

If they agree, and we end up having a good chat, that’s a “baton pass success!” moment.

Here are the seven cafés I’m planning to visit. Actually, I’ve already been to most of them and feel pretty confident they’ll welcome this idea:

1. Hong Kong – Barista Jam
   A famous café in Sheung Wan. I got so excited catching up with an old friend that I forgot to take decent photos 💦. Honestly, I’m a bit nervous about this one 💦💦. Fingers crossed!
2. Shenzhen – GEE Coffee
   I’ve already written about this one before—definitely a safe bet.
3. Singapore – Apartment Coffee
   This will be my first visit. I really love Nylon Coffee (which I’ve mentioned several times before), but since they don’t have counter seating, it’s hard to have real coffee talk. Apartment Coffee seems promising based on online reviews.
4. Johor Bahru – My Liberica
   Run by one of the people I respect most in the coffee world, Mr. Jason Liew. I’ve written about this place several times—it’s such a feel-good café.
5. Melaka – WA Coffee
   I left a message on their Instagram saying “I’ll be coming by,” and they actually remembered me (or maybe even waited for me?)—such a warm, welcoming place.
6. Kuala Lumpur – Ghostbird Coffee
   KL has tons of specialty coffee shops, but I always end up coming back here. Their social media shows they’re constantly experimenting, and their depth and quality are truly top-tier.
7. Ho Chi Minh City – 96B Café & Roastery
   I joined a roasting workshop here during my 2024 trip, and it left one of the strongest impressions on me. Honestly, I was amazed to find such an outstanding café in Vietnam (a country I also love for its traditional coffee style). This shop is both edgy and relaxing—a rare gem.

All of these places, except Hong Kong and Singapore, are coffee-producing regions. To stand on equal ground with them, it’s important for me to represent “Japan” or “Tokyo” through the roast I bring. That’s why Philocoffea’s Tokyo Blend feels like the perfect choice.

Of course, if someone says, “Kasuyasan? Never heard of him,” I might be at a loss—but I doubt that’ll happen!
