前稿で、「チャイナタウンの最古のヒンドゥー寺院は何故にチャイナタウンに？」と素朴な疑問を呈しました。
これって結構単純な話で、移民の入植当時はチャイナタウンのエリアに集中していたのが、諸事情で政府主導でインド系を別の地に移動させ、それがリトルインディアになった、という話なのですね。マレーシア各地の諸事情は「政府主導」にはならないところが、多くの地でリトルインディアは立地の明確さがあっても、チャイナタウンはそんなに明確ではないとことろに繋がるように思います。（そして政治にはあまり入らないようにしています）
とにかくここでの稿は「コミュニティー形成と寺院の関連性」ということで、そこでの繋がりを「その当時の空気によりスムーズにタイムスリップする」というところにあります。
この観点で、シンガポールはものすごくわかりやすいところが、実際に行ってみても非常におもしろいところであります。下記薄青はチャイナタウンの主要寺院、薄緑はリトルインディアの主要寺院で、見事に１９世紀前半と、後半それ以降に分かれているじゃあないですか！
念のため、チャイナタウンとリトルインディアの位置関係を再掲しておきます。マーライオンが真ん中に近いところ、といった感じですね。
問題は「あの当時の空気にどれだけタイムスリップできるか」というところなのですが、ここまでの領域は簡単にはいけないので、次回訪問に繋げていきたいですね。たぶん、「観光色」を除く必要があると思います。チャイナタウンの人混みの中でいくら歩き廻っても無理でしょうからね。博物館なりヘリテージセンターのようなところで古い写真に囲まれて。何回でも。

In my previous article, I raised a simple question: “Why is the oldest Hindu temple located in Chinatown?”
The answer is actually quite straightforward. When immigrants first settled in the area, many of them—regardless of ethnicity—were concentrated in what is now Chinatown. Later, for various reasons, the government relocated the Indian community to another district, which then became Little India.
In Malaysia, such relocations were not usually government-led, which may explain why many towns have clearly defined Little Indias, yet their Chinatowns are often less distinctly located. (I try not to get too deep into politics, though.)
In any case, this article focuses on the relationship between community formation and temples, and on how understanding that connection allows us to “time travel” smoothly back into the atmosphere of that era. From this perspective, Singapore offers an especially clear and fascinating example—you can really feel it when you go there.
The temples marked in light blue below are the major ones in Chinatown, and those in light green are in Little India. Interestingly, they are beautifully divided between the early and the late 19th century!
Just to clarify, I’ve included a map again showing the relative positions of Chinatown and Little India—roughly with the Merlion located near the center between them.
The real challenge is how much we can “time travel” back into the atmosphere of that period. It’s not something that can be done easily, so I’d like to explore it further on my next visit. I think it’s important to remove the “touristic” layer from the experience. You can’t really feel it just by wandering through the crowds of Chinatown. Instead, you need to be surrounded by old photographs in a museum or heritage center—again and again.
