It should be one of the highest honor of Mr. Ron Carter (May 4,1937- ) to have been given the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (旭日小綬章) from Japanese government.
It was the first time for foreign jazz musician to get it.
Ron Carter has established his professional carrier firstly at Miles Davis “Golden” quintet.
He joined Miles’ first visit to Japan in 1964. (Miles, Sam Rivers, Herbie, Ron, Tony)
After that, he made many visits to Japan for V.S.O.P., Hank Jones’ The Great Jazz Trio, Herbie Hancock Trio and others.
In addition, he made several session with Japanese musicians, which was one of the major reason for getting that prize, probably.
I like the session with Isao Suzuki (piccolo bass), Hank Junes(p), Ron Carter (b), Roy Hanes (ds), and string quartet. Arrangement by Masahiko Sato.
Ron Carter is the developper of piccolo bass. However, here Ron played double bass, and Isao Suzuki played piccolo bass !!
