GEORGE KAWAGUCHI’S CHALLENGE IN “TAPPAN ZEE” IN 1979

JAZZその他音楽

George Kawaguchi is a Japanese drummer who lead modern jazz boom in Japan together with Hidehiko Matsumoto and others in 50s- 60s. His drum solo was so powerful and highly showy, usually long and long.

Frankly speaking, sorry to say, when I got interest in jazz, my major interest was “AFTER SADAO WATANABE” who developed Japan jazz collaborated with USA top musicians.

However, I was awakened by “SUPER GEORGE AND SUPER BAND (1979)

ジョージ川口スーパーバンド1 01 – Tappan Zee

In fact it was well impressive with so many popular songs like Stevie Wonder and so on. And top tune is “TAPPAN ZEE”. Of course it was the most frequent tune I take in this album.

More important point is that participating members here;

George Kawagiuchi (ds), Isao Suzuki (b), Hideo Ichikawa (p), Hidehiko Matsumoto (ts), Yasuaki Shimizu (ts), Yoshio Otomo (as), Genji Sawai (as), Kenji Nakazawa (tp), Hitoshi Okano (tp), Osamu Shiomura (tb), Yoshio Oikawa (tb)

See many younger horn section !! In fact it should be high challenge for him. Also it was in 1979, the very important year for me !!!!

Tunes;

1.Tappan Zee, 2. Feel So Good , 3. I Can’t Get Started, 4. Isn’t She Lovely, 5. Fantasy, 6. Superstition, 7. How Deep Is Your Love, 8. Friends
