What would you think of “a session between professional and amateur” ??
It is an issue of many kinds of opinion. It looks like more people are negative ???
In fact there are several jazz clubs where they are coordinating such sessions. I had a chance to listen to an opinion from NO ROOM FOR SQUARES (in Shimo-Kitazawa, usually on weekday for cafe and bar, on weekends for live performances)
Generally he is a people of negative. However, positive at the same time, because fundamentally such kind of action is strongly based on “LOVE TO MUSIC“.
Oh yes, no need of session if the market of jazz is well wide and enough chance to get an income !! Such professionals are trying to give chances for younger musicians to be more positive to play, sometimes very kindly, sometimes very seriously.
Then, why there are so many opinions to be negative ??
One of the main reason is that on such kind of session, performances are easily to be DULL after play and play by several players. If only have a chance of one tune, each player would select the similar type of tune. On the other hand ordinal performance by single leader is considered well of the total structures. There are some more points….
In my opinion, I like to see such “LOVE ON THE MUSIC” by both professionals and amateurs.

NO ROOM FOR SQUARES (下北沢）は、喫茶、バー、ライブハウスの3面すべてに全力投球されているところ、頭が下がりっぱなしのスゴイ店だと思います。開店2周年を迎え、ライブへの怒涛の投球は、見ていて余計な心配（？）をしそうになるほど渾身のものです。一呼吸をおかれた後の展開がまた楽しみになるばかりです。
基本は週末のライブは、通常な運営ですが、BaBaBarと称する馬場智章さんのスペシャルではセッションもあって、その辺でのお話を伺う機会が持てました。
マスターご自身「決してセッションは好きではない」という前提で、ネガティブな側面は多々あるものの、「ジャズの裾野を広げられる限りは意志のあるミュージシャンがポジティブに取り組んでいる」と言ったところに話は落ち着いたようです。
・通常のライブは1時間なり2時間の枠内でミュージシャンが意図する起承転結（？）の展開が普通となるが、セッションではどうしても短い「受け」が中心となって冗長になりがち。たぶんここが一番のポイントになりそうです。
・店内の空気はかなり「自由」になりすぎて、店としての管理は非常に困難になる
・客の立場としては、ホストの演奏目当て、セッション演者の交友関係も多く、千差万別ながら、基本は「自由に出入り」
・ホストとなるミュージシャンのアマチュアへの視線も、当然ながら千差万別で温かさ厳しさ取り混ざるものですが根底にあるのは「音楽愛」のようです。
本来的にはセッションをしなくても音楽の向上を目指す人は努力していくものでしょう。しかし決して大きくはないマーケットの中で、裾野を広げていく意識を持つのであれば、実際見えないところを含めかなり様々な取り組みをされている。今後とも様々なところでお付き合いができれば、と思う限りです。
