There is a common understanding that jazz is rather serious. When we think about the creation period in 100 years ago, we agree on it. Also we never imagine Miles Davis or John Coltrane had laughing when they were concentrated on playing.
However, music always changes in its style in accordance with its history. We just guess when “laughing” was in ahead of their playing. We see Chick Corea and/or Herbie Hancock had a technical lead with their MC at their live performance.
In Japan, Yosuke Yamashita, Akira Sakata and their group made their days of burst out into laughing at their peak of concentration.
Now in Japan, it is happy to see some of the great musicians have been succeeding.

Just at the start of the gig, immediately, they grasped full-seated customers heart by laughing, which was like beyond of concentration.

In Japan, there are so many variety of performance presented here and there.
It is a clear artistry, without any doubt.
And we can see it just open the door of No Room For Square frequently at the weekends.
ジャズは基本的にシリアスとの認識が一般にあります。100年前の創成期を考えるとどうしてもそうですし、MILES DAVISやJOHN COLTRANEの演奏に笑いの要素が入ることは考えられませんでした。
しかしもちろん音楽は時代で変遷するもの。「笑い」が前面に出てきたのはいつの頃でしょうか？
明白なのはCHICK COREA, HERBIE HANCOCK の、特にライブパフォーマンスでの客先を引き付ける技術。日本では山下洋輔さん、坂田明さんなどなどが一つの時代を作りました。
さてさて、2022年6月25日。東京は下北沢、NO ROOM FOR SQUARES。
先進性の高いライブを毎週末頻度高く開かれていることで有名な店です。本日の演奏は、菅原高志(ds)、菊池太光(p)、織原良治(fretless b)、井上銘(g)。「PEACE LIVE」
柔軟取り交ぜた演奏のレベルの高さは言うまでもないのですが、特に初っ端に「笑い」をふんだんに取り入れたのに脱帽しました。「プロの遊び」ですね。それが客席と存分に一体で共有できたのがすばらしい。
MCでのトークがまた楽しい。例えば織原さんの曲の説明。「ヌデレバの追走」。さっぱりわかりません。何でも、アテネオリンピックのマラソンで金メダルを取ったのは野口みずきですが（そのくらいはわかる）、銀メダルがケニアのヌデレバで、「ヌデレバが野口みずきを後ろから猛追するときをイメージした曲」
だそうです。それを笑いで客席に浸透させる。果たして織原さんは「追走される立場」をイメージされたのか、もしくは「追走する立場？」 余計なことまで考えてしまいます。
こんな時代です。笑いがあったほうがいいに決まっています。そして大抵は「シリアス」が根底にあるものです。もっというと、日本のジャズの隆盛はあちらこちらで伝えられていますが、幅広さも特筆されるものです。たぶん世界での最先端と言ってもいい。それが、それがですよ、NO ROOM FOR SQUARESに週末足繁く通えば、幅広さと芸術性を存分に堪能できる！
この時代は決して悪いことばかりではないようです。
