If we can be back to the past days…… This is the common question for human beings.
For so many jazz fans in Japan, the reply might be Jan.02, 1961.
In fact it is a deification episode that Art Blakey and Jazz Messengers first live in Japan was extremely in enthusiastic. And human being want to see it by himself.
The first day was Jan.02, 1961, at Sankei Hall.
Art Blakey (ds)
Lee Morgan (tp)
Wayne Shorter (ts)– just joined
Bobby Timmons (p)
Jymie Merritt (b)
According to jazz critic, Shoichi Yui （油井正一）, previously released “ART BLAKEY AND LES JAZZ MESSENGERS AU CLUB SAINT GERMAN (vol.1-3)” were crazily in reputation. Already hottest air was spread throughout almost all of jazz fans in Japan.
The welcome party was held in Akasaka, but Art Blakey himself was not in trust that they were truly welcome. Actually he was in late by a few hours, finally when he arrived at the party, he was so surprised by the strongest applause by many fans !!
It was the start for him to be a japanophilia!!
Thank you very much Art Blakey and Jazz Messengers!
